The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is a public university established in 1990. Committed from its beginnings to the pursuit of excellence in research and teaching, it holds 22 undergraduate programs, 91 master courses and 9 doctoral degrees in the fields of biomedical sciences, social sciences and humanities, and communication and information technologies. The UPF ranked 13th in the Times Higher Education Under 50 World University Ranking 2014 and is, as the only Spanish University, among the 200 world best universities in the overall Times Higher Education University Ranking 2013/14. The UPF has a strong international composition, show great dynamism in research and consider transversal education as a must.
The UPF will participate in MedBioinformatics through its Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS). The DCEXS is located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). The PRBB is devoted to research on human health and biomedicine and it promotes synergies and collaboration among the seven centres it hosts (DCEXS-UPF, CRG, IMIM, CMRB, CREAL, FPM, IBE). The PRBB has a critical mass of 1400 people from 55 different countries (more than 40 % are international members), an accumulated R&D budget of approximately 80 M € per year and cutting-edge scientific equipment. The organisation model of the PRBB is cooperative, with common spaces that facilitate the interrelationship between the centres as well as sharing advanced scientific-technical services. The PRBB is physically and institutionally connected with the Hospital del Mar (see description of PSMAR).
